23-Sep-2006: Mortarium with graffiti

We have recently excavated a substantial shard of a Roman mortarium (a mixing vessel with a gritted inner surface).

Unfortunately it was out of context and of itself, is not a terribly unusual find. Below are  photographs of the interior and exterior. However, there is something that intrigues us and with which you may be able to help

 

If you look carefully at the exterior picture above, you may spot some graffiti.  This is shown much more clearly in the photograph below. At the moment we do not know what this says.
