Roman Ditch discovered in the Graveyard

September 2007

Very recently we have discovered a Roman ditch in the NW area of the chapel graveyard running in an East -West direction. So far we have excavated about 10 metres of it, and have found within it many sherds of Roman pottery along with various animal bones and fragments of human bone. Running into this ditch from the direction of the high ground are the remains of a drainage gully.  There are a series of small postholes alongside this gully and some larger ones on the edge of the ditch.  As yet we don't know what the function was of this feature but it is a very interesting find and excavation is continuing...watch this space !
