Archaeology courses offer chance to search for lost Abbey

A lecturer is to appear on television in a programme investigating the buried treasures found in and around Chester.

Mike Emery, who teaches part-time archaeology courses at West Cheshire College, took part in the Time Team special Search for Lost Abbey when the team came to search for the lost Abbey of Poulton.

Mr Emery, who has been exploring the site with a number of archaeologists, volunteers and students for 11 years, has been passing on his knowledge to students for the last nine years and many of them now make up a team of dedicated diggers hoping to unearth more lost relics at the site,

Mr Emery said: "The site in Poulton is an important one dating back around 6,000 years.  We've found many Roman, Saxon and prehistoric artifacts here as well as a chapel, henge and burial ground.

"Time Team came long to help us look for a lost Abbey that we believe is here too, and, although we didn't locate it during the dig, the team has given us a possible location on where it might be so we're hoping to pursue that next.

"The courses at West Cheshire College are designed to encourage people to get into archaeology by working at the site and most of the people we have here have been to one of the night classes held at the college.

"Students on this year's courses will be able to take part in Saturday digs to get involved in trying to locate the lost Abbey, as well as to help search for further henges and burial mounds at the site."

The two courses, Archaeology and Celtic Myths and Medieval Chester / Cheshire will start on Monday 18th and Thursday 21st September.  For details contact Pat Tripney on 01244 670536.

Search for Lost Abbey is due to be broadcast in February.
