Sponsorship Opportunities The project has come along way from its humble beginnings. Like the many periods of history that came before, Poulton continues to change and evolve through the hard work and dedication of the professionals and volunteers who care enough to shape it. The Poulton Project has captured the imagination of many, but what is important however, is to involve the whole community in a project that is expected to last 10 years. Because of the very nature of archaeology many who would like to be involved become naturally excluded through no fault of their own. Access to the site is not necessarily difficult but there is a need to provide special facilities for the needs of disadvantaged groups, both adults and especially children. The long-term goal is to establish a research and educational centre that will cater for children of all ages and in particular a multi faced facility for all to enjoy the pleasures of archaeology. We are currently constructing an iron – age roundhouse, which has been donated by Liverpool Museum and would be typical of dwellings on this site for thousands of years. At the moment we lack the funds to have the thatch put on the roof. We would also like to improve the facilities and access for the less able, so that they too might enjoy their archaeology and learn about the history of this site. Every year we take several dozen students and teach them the practical side of archaeology. To do this, of course, we need to provide all the necessary tools ranging from wheelbarrows and trowels to surveying equipment and drawing paper. The Crime Scene Investigators from Merseyside and Cheshire police also come to this site to be taught the techniques of excavating skeletal remains. Over the past few seasons the project has run on a shoestring with funding entirely dependent on public sponsorship, special fund-raising events and the tireless efforts of the volunteers who come along, rain or shine, to make sure the work continues. If you feel you or your organisation would like to help in any way please contact us as below. There are many ways that your support could be put to good use to enable youngsters, students and the wider community to learn more about their local history.
